Getting Started

How do I get started with my building project?

Start by reaching out via our contact form or giving us a call. We'll arrange an initial consultation (usually on-site if you have land) to discuss your vision, budget, and timeline. From there, we'll talk you through the process and provide a clear path forward.

Do you service areas outside Albury-Wodonga?

We primarily service Albury-Wodonga and surrounding areas (within about 30-40km). For projects further afield, get in touch and we'll discuss whether we can accommodate your project.

What types of projects do you take on?

We specialize in custom home builds, renovations & extensions, house and shed slabs, and decorative concreting. We take on projects of all sizes — from a simple driveway to a full custom home build.

Can you help with design, or do I need my own plans?

Both! If you already have plans from an architect or designer, we can work from those. If you're starting from scratch, we can recommend trusted local designers who understand how to create practical, beautiful homes suited to our region.

Pricing & Budgeting

How much does it cost to build a new home in Albury-Wodonga?

Costs vary based on size, design, finishes, and site conditions. As a rough guide, expect anywhere from $2,500 to $3,500+ per square meter for a quality custom build. We provide detailed, transparent quotes so you know exactly what you're getting.

Do you offer fixed-price contracts?

Yes. We provide detailed fixed-price contracts that outline everything included — from slab to final finishes. We're upfront about what's in and what's not (like landscaping, driveways, fencing) so there are no surprises down the track.

What's included in a typical building quote?

Our quotes include site preparation, slab, framing, roofing, windows, doors, insulation, electrical, plumbing, internal finishes (cabinetry, flooring, painting), and fixtures. Items typically NOT included: landscaping, driveways, fencing, and retaining walls (unless specifically quoted).

Can I make changes during the build?

Yes, but changes (called variations) need to be documented and priced before we proceed. We'll talk through the cost and timeline impact so you can make an informed decision. Early changes are easier and cheaper than late-stage changes.

Do you offer payment plans?

Payment is structured in stages tied to key milestones (e.g., slab pour, frame up, lock-up, fit-out, completion). This protects both you and us, ensuring work is paid for as it progresses. We'll outline the payment schedule in your contract.

Timelines & Process

How long does a new home build take?

A typical custom new home build takes between 6 to 12 months from breaking ground to handover, depending on size, complexity, and design. Weather, council approvals, and material availability can also impact timelines.

How long does a renovation or extension take?

Timelines vary: kitchen renovations take 3–6 weeks, bathroom renovations 2–4 weeks, and living area extensions 6–12 weeks. Whole-home refurbishments can take 8–16 weeks depending on scope and staging.

How often will I receive updates during the build?

We provide regular updates at key milestones, and you're welcome to visit the site (with advance notice). Mason is always available by phone or email if you have questions between updates.

What happens if there are delays?

We plan conservatively and communicate proactively. If delays occur (weather, material supply, unforeseen site issues), we'll let you know immediately and adjust the timeline. Our goal is to keep you informed and minimize disruption.

Approvals & Compliance

Do I need council approval to build?

Yes, most building projects (new homes, extensions, slabs, major renovations) require Development Approval (DA) and a Construction Certificate (CC) from council. We'll guide you through the process and can handle submissions on your behalf.

How long does council approval take?

Development Approval typically takes 4–8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project and council workload. We'll help you prepare a complete application to minimize delays.

What about building insurance and warranties?

All our builds are covered by Home Warranty Insurance (required by law for projects over $20,000). We also provide comprehensive warranties on our workmanship. See our Warranty page for full details.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Mason Collins Building operates under NSW Contractor Licence 458619C and carries full public liability and workers' compensation insurance. You're protected throughout the entire build.

House & Land Packages combine a titled block of land with a ready-to-build home design. We partner with local land developers to offer affordable, turnkey packages with fixed pricing and streamlined timelines. Learn more on our House & Land page.

Can I customize a House & Land Package?

Yes! While packages come with set floor plans and specifications, you can often make changes to finishes, layouts, and upgrades. We'll discuss your options and provide pricing for any variations you want to make.

What's the advantage of a House & Land Package?

Fixed pricing, faster timelines, and streamlined approvals. You know exactly what you're paying upfront, and we handle everything from land acquisition through to handover. It's a stress-free way to get into your new home.

Working With Us

Who will I be working with during my build?

You'll work directly with Mason and the core team. We're a hands-on builder — you're not dealing with a call center or project managers you've never met. Mason is on-site regularly and available to answer questions throughout the build.

Do you use subcontractors or your own team?

We use a combination of our own team and trusted local subcontractors (plumbers, electricians, etc.) who we've worked with for years. We manage all trades directly to ensure quality and accountability.

Can I visit the site during construction?

Absolutely! We encourage site visits (with advance notice for safety and scheduling). Seeing your home come together is exciting, and we're happy to walk you through the progress.

What if I'm not happy with something during the build?

Communication is key. If something doesn't look right or doesn't match what was agreed, let us know immediately. We'll address it transparently and work with you to find a solution. Our goal is for you to love the result.
